Khunde Hospital

Khunde hospital is located in Kunde village at an altitude of 3,840 meters of the Mt. Everest region was built in 1966 by Sir Edmund Hillary on the request of the Sherpa Community. It is a 15 bedded hospital, which provides OPD service, delivery and maternal/child health service, distribution of contraceptive and immunization service, inpatient and outpatient service, and pathology service. The hospital is operated by a doctor in charge and a medical officer along with a nurse, CMA, ANM, and Lab technician. The hospital has expanded its services to village health clinics at Phortse, Thame. The Hospital and its peripheral outreach clinics are entirely funded by Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation, Canada since 1977. The hospital is being managed under the constitution of Himalayan Trust Nepal.

Kunde Hospital has been managed by Himalayan Trust Nepal. The entire operation cost of the hospital and its peripheral clinics were funded by Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation, Canada from the year 1976 to the end of the year 2017 and 80% of the total cost from the beginning of 2018 to the end of 2020. The American Himalayan foundation has been funding the 20% of the total cost from the beginning of 2018 to the end of 2020 and 50% of the cost from the beginning of the year 2021. Himalayan Trust New Zealand is providing 40% of funding support. The hospital has provided high quality health care services to the local community and visitors visiting the region for over five decades.

The hospital serves the communities of Khumbu and Upper Farak region of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality (KPLRM) ward 3, 4 and 5. In addition to the locals, hospital has been providing service to the people who have moved to the area for work and also to the seasonal workers and trekkers. The number of patients seen at Kunde hospital outpatient department in the last fiscal year from July16, 2021 to July 15, 2022 is 4,595 and in three outreach clinics (Phortse, Monjo and Thame) is 1,468. In total, 6,063 patients were provided medical service under the management of Kunde hospital including three outreach clinics.
