Sir Edmund Hillary

Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008)

Sir Edmund Hillary was the first man to climb Mt Everest / Chomolungma / Sagarmatha along with his climbing partner Tenzing Norgay in 1953. This was one of many remarkable achievements: First to climb Mt Everest 29 May 1953; first to drive vehicles across Antarctica to the South Pole in 1958; drove jetboats up the Ganges River from the ocean to the sky in 1977; built 42 schools and hospitals and infrastructure in the Mt Everest region from 1961 to 2008 and three airstrips including Lukla Airstrip in 1964; Ambassador and High Commissioner to India, Bangladesh and Nepal 1985 to 1990; but he always said his greatest contribution was to education in Solukhumbu in Nepal. Since the 1960s, the Himalayan Trust, founded by Sir Edmund and Louise Hillary, has inspired New Zealanders to support the people of Nepal. And that is what this centre is dedicated to.

Transforming Historical Classroom Building in to Sir Edmund Hillary Visitor Centre

In April 2023, the two-room aluminium classroom building, originally constructed by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1961 as the first school building, was transformed into the Sir Edmund Hillary Visitor Centre. This centre aims to preserve Hillary’s legacy while generating income for Khumjung School.

The centre was inaugurated on 29th May 2023, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest. Distinguished guests, including the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Rt. Hon. Helen Clark, members of the Hillary and Tenzing families, and local community representatives, attended the event, making it a truly international affair.

Background

In 1960, local Sherpas asked Sir Edmund Hillary to build a school for their children, leading to the opening of the first classroom in 1961. This initiative sparked a transformation in local education, providing new opportunities for countless children over the last six decades.

Recognizing Sir Ed’s contributions, the Khumjung School Management Committee (SMC) and local community, requested Himalayan Trust Nepal (HTN) to establish the visitor centre. The project, supported by Sarah and Peter Hillary, aimed to document and interpret Sir Ed’s life-long humanitarian efforts, benefiting thousands of people in Solukhumbu through education, healthcare, environment, culture preservation, and livelihood improvement.

The centre not only preserves history but also raises funds for Khumjung School, ensuring sustainable quality education in the Khumbu region.

Objectives of the Centre

The visitor centre aims to preserve and present Sir Edmund Hillary’s legacy through the following objectives:

  1. Educate the Younger Generation: Inspire young people about Sir Ed’s life and values through engaging exhibits.
  2. Provide Historical Information: Offer detailed information about Sir Ed’s projects to foster appreciation of his legacy.
  3. Promote Tourism and Generate Income: Attract tourists to generate income for the school’s sustainability and local community.
  4. Develop an Educational Learning Centre: Collaborate with local institutions to create educational programs on exploration and philanthropy.

Collaborative Efforts

A thorough needs assessment was conducted to determine the requirements for establishing the visitor centre, forming the basis for a comprehensive plan.

In September 2020, HTN’s technical team visited Khumjung Secondary School to assess the two-room aluminium building constructed by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1961. They identified several issues: cracks in the foundation walls, damaged wooden floors, roof and wall leakages, broken windows, damaged supports, water-damaged ceilings and insulation, and a lack of electricity. A meticulous plan was developed to address these problems and ensure the building’s structural integrity.

Prior to the assessment, meetings were held with key stakeholders, including the Hillary Family, Himalayan Trust NZ, the School Management Committee, and local community leaders, to facilitate a collaborative renovation approach.

In 2019, architect, Rick Pearson, curator and Sir Ed’s biographerAlexa Johnston, and Sarah Hillary, conducted a site assessment and prepared the architectural and 3D design for the visitor centre. This design was reviewed and approved by all stakeholders, serving as the blueprint for fundraising and project implementation.

Dedicated efforts were undertaken to curate an impressive collection of documentation, exhibits, and interactive elements that vividly depict the inspiring life and remarkable humanitarian works of Sir Edmund Hillary. These carefully designed exhibits stand as a testament to his enduring legacy. Led by Sarah Hillary in New Zealand, the display content was developed by Alexa Johnston and the exhibition design by Rick Pearson, while the team in Nepal provided valuable input and local insights. Mr. Nick Eagles, also part of the New Zealand team, played a pivotal role in transforming the curated content into extraordinary display designs.

The collaborative involvement of the Hillary Family, the School Management Committee, and the local community ensured that the visitor centre’s design and implementation aligned with the vision and objectives of all parties involved.

Funding for the Project

Funds were successfully raised through generous contributions from various donors. The support received was instrumental in making the project financially viable and sustainable. In Nepal, HTN coordinated with various donors and supporters whereas Peter and Sarah Hillary in New Zealand played key role in raising funding for the project. The generous donors includes Rolex Perpetual Planet (through Peter and Sarah Hillary), Himalayan Trust UK, Sir Edmund Hillary Stiftung, Germany, New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade Manatū Aorere, Himalayan Trust Nepal, The Greater Himalayas Foundation- Honouring Legacy of Mingma Norbu Sherpa, Susannah Robinson, Dr. Tshering Wangdi Sherpa, Ex-student of Khumjung School.

Renovation of Historic Aluminium Building

The two-room aluminium building at Khumjung Secondary School was meticulously renovated. The process began by lifting the building, demolishing the old foundation, and constructing a new, sturdy foundation. The building was then securely repositioned and interconnected at various points.

Attention then shifted to the main structure. Wooden supports were added according to design specifications, the front pole was replaced, and all roof and wall holes were sealed to prevent water seepage. Window glass was replaced and fixed.

Partitions were constructed, and large wall panels were installed as per design guidelines. The old wooden floor was replaced with new timber flooring. The renovation was completed within two months, revitalizing the structure while preserving its original charm.

Documentation and Exhibits

Dedicated efforts were undertaken to curate an impressive collection of documentation, exhibits, and interactive elements that vividly depict the inspiring life and remarkable humanitarian works of Sir Edmund Hillary. These carefully designed exhibits stand as a testament to his enduring legacy. Led by Sarah Hillary, a team based in New Zealand took charge of developing the content, while the team in Nepal provided valuable input and local insights.

Mr. Nick Eagles played a pivotal role in transforming the curated content into extraordinary display designs. The displays were meticulously printed in Nepal and subsequently transported to Khumbu for installation. Additionally, a 3D map of the Sagarmatha National Park was produced in Germany and then shipped to Kathmandu before making its way to Khumjung.

The transportation of display prints, interior panels, and furniture posed significant challenges due to the remote location. These materials had to be carefully transported by road to Taksindu, and then expertly slung to Shyangboche using helicopters. The logistical complexities involved in transporting these materials to the site proved to be a major undertaking.
