On the afternoon of August 16, 2024, a catastrophic Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) swept through the Thame Valley, causing immense destruction and despair. Nearly half of the village was destroyed, with severe damage to the school and hostel buildings, the health clinic, trekkers’ lodges, power supply, numerous homes, and potato crops. The village is now filled with rubble, sand, mud, and rocks, making the area resemble a riverbed. The flood also damaged the water intake of the Khumbu Bijuli Company, the region’s sole power-generating plant, resulting in a loss of electricity across the entire area.
The Himalayan Trust Nepal, with generous funding from the Himalayan Trust NZ, the American Himalayan Foundation, the Himalayan Trust UK, Sir Edmund Hillary Stiftung Germany, and other donors, had previously built six classroom buildings, a student hostel, and a health clinic after the 2015 earthquake. We also provided ongoing support through a computer lab, teacher training, and salary support for teachers, ensuring that the children of Thame received a quality education. However, the current situation is devastating and has turned everything upside down.
Now, in this time of crisis, we urgently need humanitarian support to assist the students, teachers, and the local community. We are working closely with the local government, Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality, the school management committee, Himalayan Trust NZ, and other donors to provide relief support and relocate the 47 students of Thame to Khumjung School so that the students can continue their studies in a safe learning environment.
