With the support of Edutech Nepal and Himalayan Trust, a modern computer lab has been set up in Khumjung Secondary School. Located in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-4, Khumjung, Solukhumbu District. This is the first School built by Sir Edmund Hillary(Bara Sab) in 1961. Currently, the school has 350 students and 19 teachers.

In 1960 local Sherpa people of Khumjung asked New Zealand Climber Sir Edmund Hillary if he would build a school for their children. In response to that request, Sir Ed opened the first small classroom at Khumjung in 1961 and sparked the light of education in Solukhumbu. More than fifty years later, access to local schooling has transformed hundreds of lives and offered bright new possibilities for children of the region.
The Khumjung School Management Committee and local community have decided to preserve the history of Sir Ed and his legacy through the establishment of “Sir Edmund Hillary’s Schoolhouse in the Clouds Visitor Center” in the first-ever built two-room aluminum building. This proposed visitor center will be equipped with documentation and interpretation of his great humanitarian works initiated since the 1960s. There is rarely anyone in the Solukhumbu who are not benefited from the great humanitarian initiatives in the field of education, health, culture preservation, environment protection, and livelihood improvement through Himalayan Trust. Since Khumjung attracts more than 20,000 visitors each year, the visitor center can generate income for the sustainability of Sir Ed’s first school.
OBJECTIVES TO THE VISITOR CENTER
- To educate the younger generation about Sir Ed and his contribution
- To provide historical information about Sir Ed and his projects to national and international visitors
- To present the center as a tourist attraction and generate income to the school and local community
- To develop the center as an educational learning center for Khumbu schools
We have started renovating the building with necessary maintenance work by forming a local User Committee and the progress is impressive. We are planning to establish and inaugurate the center on the occasion of the Khumjung School’s Diamond Jubilee in May 2021.
